Meeting Minutes: Christian Growth and Nurture Committee
Date 02/02/10 6:45 p.m.
Present: Pastor Don Bailey-Francois, Sharon Gluhosky, Lou Jeffery, Dottie Marshall, Barbara Peck, Joanne Raulukaitis, Janet Wieliczka, Sharon McLaughlin.
Sharon G. led a responsive reading of faith and gratitude. The minutes were accepted as presented.
Faith Question: Sharon G. asked a faith question, “How many denominations have your belonged to?” and the committee shared with their responses.
Church Family: Pastor Don used a new church directory to indicate members of the congregation who have not been attending and we should be calling to invite back (circles) and for those we should check on with Lisa Crocker (question marks). New Members classes - which are subject to change- are scheduled for Sunday, February 28, 3-5p.m., a repeat of the first class, if needed on Wednesday, March 3, at 10:00 a.m., and the second class with the boards and committees present is scheduled for Sunday, March 7, 3-5 p.m. New Members Sunday is scheduled for March 21. Pastor Don is presenting the idea to the Diaconate of an Associate Membership for people who would like to maintain membership at two churches, such as those who travel south for half of the year. Pastor Don read a letter of resignation to the committee from Pastor Karen, who has accepted an Interim Associate Pastor position in Storrs. Her last day will be Sunday, February 28, although she will continue with the Confirmation Class until May. The committee is very happy for Pastor Karen, but will miss her tremendously.
Budget/Advertising/Expenses: Sharon M. reviewed the budget and expenses. The Growth and Nurture budget was reduced by $200 to $2,000. We may have to purchase more supplies for the Welcome Center, which were about $174 in 2008. Advertising has been budgeted for $1,200 so that we can advertise in both the Journal Inquirer and Reminder for Easter. There was an additional invoice for a new guest book of $36.86.
2010 Budget in Summary:
Advertising Expense 1,200.00
Blue Christmas Expense 50.00
New Guest Book 36.86
New Members Supplies 300.00
Projects/mailings 63.14
Welcome Center Supplies 200.00
Winterfest/Gingerbread Con. 150.00
Total 2,000.00
The cost of the lanyards, which is $260.00 plus shipping will need to come from the New Members Supplies or possibly the balance of Projects if it is possible to buy them without the printing for much less. Joanne will research them further. Sharon G. will pursue possibly getting funding for New Members gifts from the Diaconate or elsewhere. She also mentioned that if we need additional funds, we could see if the New Members Supplies that Pastor Don purchases can be funded from another source. The committee agreed to see if there was a devotional or other type of book that could be used as a New Members gift, which might be less expensive than a Bible.
Meeting Minutes: Christian Growth and Nurture Committee
Date 02/02/10 6:45 p.m. (continued)
Prudential Meeting Update: Sharon G. reported that the last Prudential Meeting was spent preparing for the Annual Meeting and The Summit. She explained the function of the Prudential Committee to our new members. Sharon G. will request that the Prudential Committee put the date of the Board/Committee Fair on the calendar now, so that committees and boards have plenty of time to think about and plan for it.
Fellowship Ministry/Social Hour: Judy White has agreed to be the contact person for this ministry. Dottie reported that there are 14 members signed up to serve and 19 bakers so far on the list (many of the bakers also on the serve list). We will continue making announcements to get things rolling for this ministry. Sharon G. will announce at the second service, Dottie will announce at the first for the month of February. Sharon G. will meet with Judy about getting things started. It was noted that Judy will not be available for about a week beginning March 8. It was suggested that we separate the coffee stations further as there has been a line forming for getting coffee following the second service. The new coffee pots are also needed.
Website: Jim continues to publish normal updates. He presented “All About Online” which was open to the whole church, on January 26th and that was very well received. He has tested a “Members Only” section on the website for publishing the Annual Report, various committee minutes, including Prudential, etc. The committee will seek clarification from Jim regarding the “Members Only” section of the website on whether just board and committee members will have access, or all members of the congregation. The overall feeling was that all members should have access. Dottie reminded the committee that we need to remember and make arrangements for distributing information to those who do not have access to the website.
Winterfest/Gingerbread House Contest: Sharon M. will request that the dates for Winterfest be reserved at the church, with the church office as soon as possible. The committee agreed to offer the contest again for 2010. The original goal, of getting people into our church, is being realized
Name Tags: Janet will continue replacing the name tags weekly. Janet will also investigate the cost of putting a vinyl type of “shutter” next to the elevator on the ground level back entrance of the church.
Welcomer’s List Update: Janet will continue with the January Welcomer’s List and will begin March so that she can submit the list to the church office by February 15th.
Caller Interviews: Dottie is now interviewing church members for the Caller.
Officers of Growth and Nurture 2010: Sharon Gluhosky will continue on as Chair and Sharon McLaughlin will continue on as Secretary of the Growth and Nurture Committee for 2010. The committee agreed to assist Sharon G. as needed for Prudential meeting coverage.
Meeting Time/Day: The committee agreed to continue meeting on the first Tuesday of each month, at 6:45 p.m for 2010. The committee usually meets in Room 204 upstairs.
Contact List: A current list of committee members was circulated for corrections. Sharon M. will forward the list to the committee members.
Meeting Minutes: Christian Growth and Nurture Committee
Date 02/02/10 6:45 p.m. (continued)
Summit Goals/Committee Goals: Sharon G. read the new Summit Goals, which are basically the same as 2009 with two additions:
1.Expand Communication
2.Expand Pool of People participating on boards, committees and projects
3.Increase Church Financial Resources
4.Address Professional Staffing Needs of the church
5.Facilities Use and Improvement - Social Room spruce up, use of land purchased, additional parking needed.
The Growth and Nurture Committee decided that their primary goal will be to get the Fellowship Ministry up and running. As a secondary goal, depending upon what happens with the Social Room improvements, the committee would like to place a bulletin board in the Social Room with new members pictures added. The committee is hopeful that Women’s Fellowship will financially support that project and include the cost of a new bulletin board with the upgrade.
275th Anniversary Pictures: Mildred Dimock is looking for pictures of the 275th Anniversary that were pinned to the dividers in the Social Room and possibly some were placed in the Photo Holder in the Social Room. No one is aware of the location of the pictures.
The meeting ended at 8:30 p.m.
The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 6:45 p.m.
